One more *upon-request* article concerning questions around make up at the gym.
First of all, I don't think that one's concern should be make up before hitting the gym, however, as a person who goes training after work or university, 99% of the times i have full face make up on and I absolutely understand the challenges upon experience.
Training is a heat-release procedure which in turn makes the skin secrete sweat and due to the trapped pores, the face ends up oily and can potentially cause acne outbreaks, if one is not very careful with their skin care in general.
Furthermore, sweat can make your foundation base pretty unstable and if you are a fan of liquid products such as mascara, eyeliner, lipgloss etc, you might experience a lot of unpleasant incidents such as products slipping into your eyes, hair getting stuck on your lipgloss etc,
So that said, i decided to
1) create a list of some tips which i personally use and i found useful, especially if you spent an entire day outdoors and you go training afterwards (aka having make up already on)
2) suggest a basic skin care/make up routine if you hit the gym WITHOUT being elsewhere before (aka you start with clear skin)
If that sounds interesting to you, let's get started :)
SECTION 1: GYM AFTER A LONG DAY OUT
Preparation is the key here. Let's say you put your make up on in the morning and you're training in the evening. You need to combat the major challenges of long-hour make up, so follow your usual routine but pay special attention to these:
1. Go for a deep cleanse first thing before you apply any make up. You don't want blocked pores.
-> moisturize with a product that is not oily. You need your skin to absorb moisture, be ellastic but not oily.
2. USE PRIMER!
Primers with matte finish, will not only help the make up spread evenly but will also regulate sufficiently the oil secretion throughout the day. Use eyeprimer or pressed powder as an eyemake up base to make sure your eyeshadows will be smudge/fall off free.

The next best alternative is The Mattifier Shine Control Primer by #Estee Lauder)
3. Use waterproof products for your mascara and eyeliner.
4. AVOID heavy make up in general (contouring, smokey eyes, heavy textures, fake lashes)
5. Use matte stay-on lipstick. (#W7 and #Maybelline MatteMe series are my personal favourites here)
6. Quick fix: IF your favourite lipstick is not matte, tap a small amount of translucent powder across your lips with your pinky finger.
7. Set everything up with a loose setting powder OR a setting spray, before you leave the house.
8. Carry the setting spray or loose powder with you and apply A SMALL quantity only on the parts of your face with major oil secretion, around 30 minutes prior you exercise.
I absolutely guarantee that your make up will stay there, intact, for AT LEAST 2 hours of training.
SECTION 2: LIGHT MAKE UP JUST FOR THE GYM
As i mentioned already, you need the skin as less heavily covered as possible. So if you start with bare clean skin, first thing is to clean and moisturize well. If you want just a light make up just for the gym, skip primer and foundation.
Just BB cream, lip balm (as blush), mascara and a very thin layer of matte lipstick |
2. You don't need setting spray or anything as you're heading shortly to the gym upon application. (Photo proof below)
3. Use a waterproof mascara
4. Apply tiny quantity of blush in CREAMY format (alternatively use red/pink lipstick). I have found out that the creamy consistency blends really nicely with the moisturized skin and stays there, smudge free.
5. Add your favourite lipbalm and (if desired) add some definition with a lip pencil on the outline and inner corners of your lipline.
BONUS: SKIP PARFUME! Alcohol based parfumes might irritate your skin, plus due to the sweat, the smell will be altered after a while. Shower before gym, use a deodorant and your favourite body water instead!
